Lalit Modi, Vijay Mallya, Nirav Modi, Mehul Choksi, Christian Michel, Sanjeev Kumar Chawla, and the list goes on... What do these people have in common apart from crores of rupees in their bank accounts that don’t rightfully belong to them? They all have escaped the country and are making a mockery of the numerous summons made to them.

Godmen have been dominating our news channels lately, which got me into thinking why. Unfortunately, most of them have been in the news for all the wrong reasons like monetary scams, molestation, fraudulent practices and the like. Is this a recent phenomenon, or has this been around for a while?

Someone said that it is better to be occasionally cheated than being perpetually suspicious. But, in the case of Indian politics it just the reverse. It is better to be occasionally suspicious than being perpetually cheated. There are many recent developments that may seem harmless or routine on the face but, a little scratching on the surface and there will be a lot more than meets the eye.

Our nation’s beloved Bapu is in the news again, thanks to Joseph Lelyveld's controversial book about him and Anna Hazare’s fight against corruption in a true Gandhian style. Since two-thirds of our country’s population is under 35 years, it merits discussion to understand what the Gen Y thinks about the Mahatma? Or perhaps, do they even bother to think about the man who led our country to freedom?

What Is Corruption?

'Corruption' is the buzzword these days with a new scam unfolding every now and then. This is one of those few words that have the rare distinction of not requiring an introduction to anybody. Just when we thought one knows enough about the topic, comes a unique comment from BJP president Nitin Gadkari. Recently, he labelled the charges against Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa as immoral and not illegal, thereby not being corrupt. Worth exploring further...
